You're right that he's pretty much the opposite of Osmo, and having a contrast from the music director's style (even when you like that style) is always welcome over the course of a long season. However, Varga is also one of the few guest conductors we get who works us as hard and as rigorously as Osmo does, and he therefore achieves better results than someone who just fixes the obvious stuff and tells us we're wonderful.He also happens to be an exceedingly friendly and outgoing guy, which doesn't hurt. Conductors who make a point of establishing a friendly relationship with an orchestra have a huge advantage, because when things aren't going well and they need to lay down the law on some point of phrasing or whatever, they can play the heavy (momentarily) without fear that we'll be offended and not want them back. Varga takes full advantage of this, to generally good effect, and we recognize that.
